00.00.0000 Uusi tapahtuma 08.11.2006 Aatos-evening Students´ government organizes Aatos-theme day every year. This autumn it took place in the evening, because of the anniversary-year. It was organized for all students and teachers. There were several singing performances and the highlight of the evening was Mr. Aatos competition. Five boys and one girl took part in the competition and the four judges gave them points for every one of the four tasks they had to do. These tasks were the funniest outfits, the fastest bread eaters, a quiz and making a statue out of a potatoe with a spoon. Our special guest of the evening was Mr. Aatos Erkko, who is the owner of the biggest newspaper company in Finland, which is Helsingin Sanomat. Written by Ina Aalto and Emmi Mäkelä, 1st grade 05.12.2006 Celebrating The Independence Day of Finland We celebrated our Independence Day on 6. December. Finland reached the age of 89. It was the last day of our exam week in school and still had one exam left. So first in the morning we went to the school yard, lifted the flag up and listened to the national song. After that we went to do the exam. Then we had the lunch time: the whole dining hall was very pretty and there were candles on the tables. How nice. After finishing the lunch we went to the big gym hall, where we had sort of an Independence Day gala. The choir of our school sang songs a few students from our school graduated and got their diplomas and their white caps. In the evening the President of Finland had Independence Day Party in her castle, where politicians, sportsmen, artists and common people had been invited by the President. Made by: Ina Aalto and Emmi Mäkelä 11.11.2007 Comenius-trip to Ankara After 13 hours of flying or being stuck at an airport, we finally made it to Ankara, Turkey's capital. We went to Turkey with the Comenius-project, for culture exchange. We stayed with a local family for the whole week we spent in Turkey and went to the same classes as the hosting student. Altough I had time to have only a few lessons because the school had planned so many activities for the foreigners and our hosts! We went for 'Ankara-tour' on Monday and Tuesday, and it lasted for 4 hours each day. On the tours, we went to Atatürk-museum and a statue museum. I saw Atatürk's picture every day at least 10 times! He was worshipped there, everybody respects him. At our school we had a big painting of Atatürk on the wall. He looked very serious and calm, reliable person. On Wednesday we travelled to Cappadocia, and the trip lasted the whole day, because the bus drives were about 10 hours altogether. We went to see everything great, an ancient underground city, weird looking rocks shaped by nature and old monasteries quarried to crag. I really enjoyed the bus trips, they made the Comenius-teams come together and created a strong solidarity. I must say, the best part of the Turkey-trip was seeing real Turkish, Polish and German people. I went through many 'culture shocks' and I had to change my mind about Turkey in many things. For example, I thought that every Turkish girl would wear a headscarf, and wouldn't wear any revealing clothes. But it was like any other Europian city! I saw only a few women who actually wore scarfs. The scarfs weren't allowed at schools, so I was very wrong about that! I also thought that women would be 'under mens control', but I really didn't see so much difference between Finland and Turkey about this. Women were more honoured than I would have imagined. Culture shocks worth mentioning were the kissing and wearing slippers inside the house. Everytime they meet their friend or say goodbye to them, they quickly 'brush' their cheecks against each other and make a silent kissing voice with their lips. Like in France or Spain! The kissing made Turkey feel very exotic from the very first day. And about the slippers. When they're at home, they wear flip-flops. I've never known how to walk with them so I had trouble getting around the house, hence I must have been an amusing sight to my hosts! The weather in Ankara was pretty cold, so I needed my jacket more than I thought I would. But luckily it rained only once, on Tuesday, but it really was raining buckets! When I got to Ankara I realized how little I actually knew about Turkey. I was aware that people go there on vacations because it's warm there, and that the kebabs, Turkey's gift to the World, come from there. I learned so much about Turkey, about the culture, people, food, language, nature, history, everything. We went to school like we do in Finland. The school, Bahçelievler Anadolu Lisesi, was very different from Erkko upper secondary school. All the students wore uniforms, black jackets, white blouses and a necktie. The necktie had black and yellow stripes on it, and it had the school seal on it. Girls had cute cotton pleatskirts and boys had black strides. The school started at 8:15 in the morning like in Erkko, but we had only 45 minute lessons and the school served no lunch. They had a kiosk downstairs, and the pupils bought hotdogs and candybars from there. But the school serving no lunch didn't change my budjet. My host wanted to pay for everything! My hosts bought me even bracelets and earrings. That is just one wonderful thing about Turkish people; they are very hospitable. At lessons, pupils don't rise their hand when they know the answer, they just shout it. Turkish vividness and loudness were also an interesting change after Finland! When we had freetime, we went ice-skating, shopping and bowling. We had such great time there! I made so many good friends on the trip, from Poland, Germany and Turkey. All in all, the trip was a very educating and pleasant experience! I wouldn't change the week in Turkey for a year in Finland. Seni özledim, I miss you. The flight to Warsaw depart at 20.45. We changed planes in Warsaw and flew to Katowice. We arrived at Katowice airport at 23.35 and our hosts and some teachers were there to welcome us. When we arrived in Pszczyna it was so late that we went straight to bed. Monday 7.4.2008 School day started at 10 o’clock and we had a welcoming ceremony in which each group’s representatives gave speeches. Polish students had prepared musical performances and we were given souvenirs. Because of the popularity of John Paul II, we were shown a video about him and given John Paul II –bookmarks. In the afternoon we toured outskirts of Pszczyna and visited the open air museum of Skansen. Later we went bowling to a near town Bielsko-Biala with our hosts and other students. We had some time to do a little shopping, too. Tuesday 8.4.2008 School started at 8 am. Each team had made PowerPoint –performances concerning their schools or Comenius-project. In the evening we went shopping to Bielsko-Biala by train. Back in Pszczyna we went to see a movie to Henna’s host. Unfotunately we were all so tired we couldn’t finish it. Wednesday 9.4.2008 At 8 am we left for Cracow by a bus. In Cracow we went to see the Wawel castle, toured the town and did some shopping. Some students had prepared speeches about the history of Cracow and it was very interesting to hear about it. We were surprised about how well-known Finnish music was there in Poland when we visited a music store. Thursday 10.4.2008 School began at 8 o’clock and we joined the lessons, for example English and German. We also participated in sport competition, where we played volleyball and badminton. In the evening we came back to school and watched a play, Midsummernights dream, performed by the Polish students, in Polish. A group of students sang Polish love songs. Then we went to eat in a restaurant. There some teachers and the mayor of Pszczyna gave farewell speeches and after eating we all went to celebrate in pubs. Friday 11.4.2008 In the morning we said goodbye to our hosts and their families and left for Cracow airport.
